[A new slave girl responding to being put in kajira positions]
I would later become extremely familiar with such positions, but they were, at the time, quite new to me, and somewhat frightening. What most frightened me about them was the way they made me feel. It was not merely that, in them, I found profoundly stirred. In them, helplessly, vulnerably, I also sensed a personal rightness. I knew that in some sense I belonged in them. This was in contradiction to my entire upbringing, background, education and conditioning. Could such things have been wrong?
– Witness of Gor, Page 23
Throughout the Gor novels, one sees kajirae commanded to assume a wide variety of positions for the convenience and pleasure of the master. While these positions are invariably both useful, and beautiful, not all of them are likely to be of use in reality. Moreover, throughout the Gor novels, not only are some of the positions referred to by the different names (e.g. ‘nadu’ and ‘Position!’ mean the same thing), but many of the positions are mentioned to have variations depending on where the position was taught and the master’s preference, and at least one valid position is not named at all (Abject Obeisance) but is commanded nonetheless. To add to the confusion, there are a number of commands which are not specific positions at all, but rather, commands to an action which might vary greatly depending on the position the girl is in (e.g. ‘nestle’, ‘lesha’, or ‘bracelets’; commands which might be given while prone, sitting, or standing).
It’s worth noting that these positions and commands are not exclusive. There are mentions in the Gor novels of different training houses that teach different positions, or subtle variations on these common positions, and that various masters might purchase girls from the specific training house which teaches the exact positions and variations which he finds most pleasing. While we’re covering the most common positions and commands for a slave, both in the books and on-line, that should not be taken to mean that these are the only positions and commands which are appropriate, or ‘allowed’ to be used for a kajira. Let each owner decide what pleases him most.
What will follow will be a comprehensive listing of every position mentioned in the Gor novels, while breaking out the commands which are not distinct positions that a girl is commanded into on her own, and distinguishing the roleplay position one might encounter in on-line venues.
A Position is defined as a specific static pose which a kajira may be commanded to assume.
A Command is defined as an action which a girl might be directed to perform, and it might come from any position.
This results in a group of 20 distinct positions from the Gor novels and 17 commands. Accordingly, these are the following types of ‘positions’ which will be covered;
- Gorean novel positions – Explicit and specific positions in the Gor novels that a kajira can be commanded to
- Gorean novel commands – Commands which designate modes, actions, variable performance, or in which the master binds the girl to a behavior. They do not stipulate a specific, static position.
- Roleplaying inventions – Positions created to facilitate on-line roleplay

Gorean Novel Positions
There are 21 distinct, discrete, static positions mentioned in the Gor novels, some under multiple names. They have been collated here in an attempt to eliminate (or at least illuminate) confusion.
Return to the Positions and Commands chart
All Fours, She-Sleen , or She- Tarsk
This position is known by many names, but the intent is clear; the kajira is reduced to the physical behavior of a lower form of animal by being placed in a four-legged position. The kajira goes down to all fours, hands and knees on the ground, and may not rise from her knees. This is basic position used in the Discipline of the She-Quadruped.
In this discipline the female is forbidden human speech. She is also forbidden human posture, in the sense that she is not allowed to rise to her feet. Her locomotion, unless commanded to roll, or put under similar commands, suitable for a pet, will be on all fours. Her food will be thrown to her, or put in pans on the ground. In either case, she must feed without the use of her hands. She may also, of course, be fed by hand, but, again, will not be permitted to touch the food with her hands. She may be taught tricks. Sometimes these are taught as functions of arbitrary sounds, so that she must learn them as any animal might, without the benefit of an earlier understanding of the word used. If she is slow to learn, of course, she is punished, as would be any other animal. When used, too, it will commonly be in the modality of the she-quadrupled. This discipline is often used as a punishment, but it may figure in the training of a new girl. It helps her to understand what she now is, an animal totally subject to her master.
Mercenaries of Gor, Pages 215-216
“Girl,” I said to her. She, addressed, scrambled to her knees. She kept her head down. She whimpered. “She does not speak,” said Boabissia. “She is perhaps under the discipline of the she-quadruped,” I said. The girl whimpered, looking at us, nodding her head affirmatively. Then she put down her head, again.
Mercenaries of Gor, Page 215
“Now on all fours, arms straight, head up!” I said. Immediately she assumed this position.
“Please do not put me in the slavery of the she-quadruped, Master,” she begged.
“I will put you there, and keep you there, if it pleases me,” I told her.
“Yes, Master,” she said.
Guardsman of Gor, Page 298
Melina, now a naked slave in sleen collar, was ordered forth on her hands and knees. A sleen leash was attached to her collar and she was marched, as a she- sleen , crawling, abused, to the rape-rack.
Slave Girl of Gor. Page 238
“In what slavery, or slaveries, will master place me?” she asked. I looked at her position. “Perhaps in these slavery of the she-quadruped,” I said. “Master may do so, if he wishes,” she said, “if it pleases him, or amuses him.”
Guardsman of Gor, Page 225
A slave is sometimes put to all fours, that she may move thusly, accompanying masters. In this posture she cannot suddenly run, or dart away. In the situation described the posture was doubtless imposed as a security measure, on an unknown slave, mysteriously arrived from the darkness. In other situations the posture may be imposed upon her as a discipline, to position her for animal usage, to remind her that she is a slave, and so on.
Mariners of Gor, Page 63
“To all fours,” he said to her.
“Yes, Master,” she said.
This position can be igniting to a female slave, being so positioned by a master. At the least, they are well reminded, so positioned beside a man, that they are slaves.
Mariners of Gor, Page 554
“Assume the position of the she-tarsk ,” I said.
She went to all fours.
Rebels of Gor, Page 144
“Here,” said Tajima to the slave, pointing to the floor of the hut, at his feet, “here, before me, go to all fours, and keep your head down.”
Rebels of Gor, Page 304
Tajima took the ropes and said to the slave, “I shall toss these ropes to the side of the hut. You will fetch them on all fours, lift them in your teeth, and then return before me, on all fours. You will then lift them in your mouth to me, and, when I accept them, you will kneel, and await my pleasure.”
Rebels of Gor, Page 308
“On all fours,” I said to her. “Crawl to the sleeping mat.”
She was then on the mat on all fours.

Bara or ‘Standard Binding Position’
The kajira goes prone on her belly, face flat on the floor and turned to her left, her wrists and ankles crossed behind her. This is the ‘Binding Position’, where the kajira is ready to be bound.
“Standard binding position,” he said.
I was prone. When a girl is prone, the standard binding position is to cross the wrists behind the back and to cross the ankles. I took this position instantaneously.” That I did this did not cause him any pleasure. No one in the room thought anything of it. I was simply a prone slave girl who had been commanded to standard binding position. No one in the room, including myself; would have expected me to do other than comply. Lack of compliance by a slave girl to a command in the Gorean world is unthinkable. She obeys.
Slave Girl of Gor, Page 125
“Bara,” said Mincon to Tula.
“Bara,” said I to Feiqua .
Both slaves went immediately to their bellies, their heads to the left, their wrists crossed behind their backs, their ankles also crossed. It is a common binding position.
Mercenaries of Gor, Page 145
“Bara, Kajira! ” he said.
She rolled quickly to her stomach, placing her wrists behind her, crossed, and crossing her ankles, ready to be bound.
Explorers of Gor, Page 77
“Bara!” he snapped.
I flung myself to my belly in the grass, putting my hands behind me, wrists crossed, and crossing my ankles, too. I lay there in confusion, in obedience. He went to pick up the binding fiber which had been removed from my ankles by Tupita , from my wrists, a bit before, by himself. I had been spared! He returned to crouch over me. Tightly then were my wrists and ankles tied. He knew well how to tie women.
“Oh!” I said, my ankles were pulled up and fastened to my wrists. He then pulled me to my knees and I knelt helplessly, closely and perfectly bound, before him.
Dancer of Gor, Page 415
“Bara!” he said.
She instantly responded to his command, as she had been trained to do. She was now on her belly, her wrists crossed behind her, her ankles, too, crossed.
Prize of Gor, Page 196
“Bara,” he said.
She went to her stomach and crossed her wrists behind her back, and crossed her ankles.
Kur of Gor, Page 317
Hitherto she had been lying on her belly in the straw, her head turned to the side, in bara , her wrists crossed behind her, with her ankles crossed, as well. It is a common holding, and helplessness, position for a slave. In it, of course, she is positioned perfectly for a swift and secure binding.
Swordsmen of Gor, Page 370
When the merchandise had been secured, each item had been placed in the bara position, though they did not know the name for the position as yet, each on her stomach, head facing to the left, her wrists crossed behind her and her ankles crossed, as well.
Smugglers of Gor, Page 3
“Bara!” she snapped.
Instantly we turned about in the neck rope, with its three knotted double loops, and went to our stomachs, our heads to the left, our wrists crossed behind us, and our ankles, as well. It is not advisable to hesitate in responding to a command. The bara position was, I suppose the first slave position in which I had been placed. Of course I did not at that time understand it, or know its name.
One is quite helpless in the bara position. One is on one’s stomach and one’s hands are behind one, so one cannot use them to rise, and one’s body is extended, with one’s ankles crossed. One cannot easily rise from that position. Too, psychologically, one feels oneself submitted, and at the mercy of others.
Smugglers of Gor, Page 296
“Bara!” I snapped.
Instantly she assumed the bara position, prone, her ankles crossed, her wrists crossed behind her body, her head turned to the left, her cheek on the mat.
So simply a slave may be positioned, to be bound hand and foot.

Belly
The kajira goes prone on her belly, hands by her head, legs parted. If commanded to crawl from this position, she must keep her belly in contact with the ground.
“To your belly,” he said.
She went to her belly, her hands at the sides of her head.
Kajira of Gor, P age 399
“And if they should snap their fingers and point to the floor?” I asked.
“Then I would swiftly lie before them, and as a slave,” she said.
Rogue of Gor, P age 102
“Stop,” he said. “To your belly.”
Then I was on my belly, on the tiles, my hands at the sides of my head, prone, before his curule chair.
Kajira of Gor, Page 427
‘Belly,’ I said to Feiqua .
Immediately Feiqua , trembling, went to her belly on the stained, sooted stones near the fire.
Mercenaries of Gor, Page 19
“On your bellies, all of you, facing away, hands at your sides, palms up,” I said.
The slaves, well trained to obey free persons, instantly, and unquestioningly, complied, with the exception of Saru , who struggled to her feet and held out her hands to Pertinax.
“Gregory!” she sobbed. “Gregory!”
“Must a command be repeated?” said Pertinax . The repetition of a command is commonly a cause for discipline, unless there is a serious reason to suppose that the command has not been heard, or has not been understood. In this case, it seemed clear the command would have been both heard and understood. Failure on the part of a female slave not to respond instantly and unquestioningly to a command can mean the whip for her.
“Oh, of course, Gregory,” she said, smiling, and quickly assumed the prescribed position.
Rebels of Gor, Page 407
“On your belly”, I said.
She backed off a bit , and went to her belly. Her hair was before her face, as she now on her belly before me looked up at me.
“Now inch forward”, I said, “remaining low on your belly, and when you reach my feet, once again, as before, lifting your head a little, tenderly and humbly, and beautifully, as though you were a slave , lick and kiss them. Good. Good. Now take my foot and place it gently on your head. Very good. Now place it again on the Mat, and kiss it again. Good. You may now belly back a little, humbly. I have not yet given you permission to rise of course.”

Brand Display, Mark, or Thigh
Despite a variety of names, this command is clearly about the kajira displaying her brand to the master. The kajira kneels and gracefully extends her branded leg, baring it to her hip so that her brand is well displayed to the master. Some consider this to be a command, rather than a position, since it can be performed in a kneel, prone, on all fours, or standing, but we do have definitive quotes showing it to be a specific position.
“Mark?” said a man.
Swiftly she rose up on her knees and turned her left thigh to the interrogator, at the same time putting her hands behind the small of her back, as though they might be braceleted there. It is one of the positions of brand display.
Mirus smiled.
Ellen flushed.
I hate him, she thought.
But she remained in the position, a common one for brand display. Her wrists, behind her back, were nearly touching. The position accentuates the breasts and, given the position of the hands, is provocatively emblematic;
Prize of Gor, Page 416
I did not give her the “thigh” or “brand” command, but I had little doubt she was now marked. In response to such a command those such as she must kneel on the right knee and extend the left leg gracefully, bared to the hip. The most common marking site on such as she is high on the left thigh, under the hip.

Capture
The kajira lays prone on her back, her knees raised with feet flat on the floor, her arms alongside her body.
“On your back,” he said, “knees raised, heels on the floor.”
I then lay before him, in a standard, supine capture position.
Kajira of Gor, Page 422
He thought she looked well on her back, in what is referred to as the “capture position.” In this position, the captive locked in the arms of the captor, the captor can assess and enjoy the least nuance of expression in the captive’s countenance. This position, too, is enjoyed by many masters with their slaves.

Hair or Leading Position
Sometimes called the ‘Leading Position, the kajira moves to the master and bends forward, drawing her hair together and to one side as she turns her head, then crosses her wrists behind her and awaits. This can be preparatory to the master taking the girl by the hair and leading her, or a haircut, or to simply clarify a kajira’s place to her.
“Leading position,” said Drusus Rencius .
I put my head down to his waist and he fastened his left hand in my hair.
Kajira of Gor, Page 134
The slave was pulled to her feet. She was roughly turned about. The hand of Tanalion’s man was then in her hair, fastening itself deeply therein. It was like the closed talon of a bird of prey. She, bound, held, was helpless. She cried out softly, so held, startled, in pain. Then, bent over, her wrists confined in the cruel, encircling binding fiber, that which I had earlier put well on her, holding them so mercilessly, so helplessly, behind her back, her head at his hip, stumbling, weeping, she was conduc ted swiftly from our presence.
Mercenaries of Gor, Page 437
Her master seized her from the circle then and hurried her from the light, her head down, held by the hair, at his left hip. This is a common leading position for female slaves being conducted short distances. As the master holds her hair in the left hand, it leaves his right hand, commonly the sword hand, free.
Magicians of Gor, Page 46
I then transferred the paga to my left hand. I then snapped my fingers and held my right hand, open, at my hip. Swiftly the girl rose to her feet and, half crouching, put her head by my hand. I fastened the fingers of my hand deeply and firmly in her red hair. She winced, and kissed at my thigh. I then, the goblet of paga in my left hand, her hair in my right, dragged her beside me, her slender chains rustling, to the nearest alcove.
Rogue of Gor, Page 59
In a moment I had left the building, pulling the captive behind me, her head down at my waist, in leading position.
Mercenaries of Gor, Pages 399-400
“A slave approaches her Master’s side and bends at the waist, gathering up her hair to present to her Master, so he may lead her by the hair. “ Her master seized her from the circle then and hurried her from the light, her head down, held by the hair, at his left hip. This is a common leading position for female slaves being conducted short distances. As the master holds her hair in the left hand, it leaves his right hand, commonly the sword hand, free.
Magicians of Gor, Page 46
She wept, trying to hold the guard’s wrist, where it was fastened so deeply, so cruelly, in her hair, she bent over, her head at his hip, hurried forth, into the room, in a common Gorean leading position.
Prize of Gor, Page 78
“I looked at the girl. I nodded to her to approach me. She did so. I held my left hand open, at my waist. She stiffened, and looked at me, angrily. I opened and closed my left hand once. I saw her training in Gorean customs had been thorough. But she never thought that such a gesture would be used to her. She came beside me, and a bit behind me, and, crouching, put her head down, deeply. I fastened my hand in her hair. She winced. Women are helpless in this position.”
Beasts of Gor, Page 409
“I then snapped my fingers and held my right hand, open, at my hip. Swiftly the girl rose to her feet and, half crouching, put her head by my hand. I fastened the fingers of my hand deeply and firmly in her red hair. She winced, and kissed at my thigh. I then, the goblet of paga in my left hand, her hair in my right, dragged her beside me, her slender chains rustling, to the nearest alcove.”
Rogue of Gor, Page 59
Others passed, too, with slaves in custody, but differently, the slaves bent over, in leading position, their heads at the hips of free men, held there by the hair, these slaves’ hands fastened, too, behind their backs.
Swordsmen of Gor, Page 431
We then thrust them stumbling to the waiting Ashigaru who took the hair of each in a separate hand and, bending them over at the waist, conducted them both in a common leading position to some point of collection.
Swordsmen of Gor, Page 461
When I was finished I took her by the hair and pulled her from beneath the table, and held her, bent over, in common slave-leading position, at my left hip, and left the table.
Mariners of Gor, Page 199
Others were put in painful leading position, one in each hand, their heads held at the hip of their keeper of the moment.
Mariners of Gor, Page 329
Then she, unsteady, and rubbing her wrists, was taken by the hair, by the proprietor’s man, was bent over, at the waist, and, in standard leading position, was conducted to the back of the tavern, and drawn through a thick curtain of layered, dangling, colored beads.
Mariners of Gor, Pages 472-473
He twisted her rudely, abruptly, about, and downward, and she was then at his feet, he crouching over her, his hand in her hair. He then straightened up angrily, and, she crying out in pain, jerked her to her feet, and held her beside him, bent over at the waist, her head tight against his hip her head down, facing the floor, she then in leading position. In a moment, she had been conducted to the side of the fellow in blue. Her small hands were on the wrists of the fellow who held her. She was whimpering. As she was held, she could only look down, into the straw. She held her head still, extremely still, to avoid more agony, for the guard’s hand was tight in her hair.

High Harness
The kajira lifts her head, extending her neck as high as possible, baring for inspection, collaring, or leashing.
“Split your knees,” he said. “More widely.”
…
“Lift your head,” he said. “Higher. Higher!”
She looked up at him, her head far back, the leash on her throat.
…
“You need not now keep your head in high-harness position,” he said to the girl.
She moved her head.

Injection
The kajira lays on her side, preparing herself for medical injections, typically in the exposed arm or haunch.
“Lie down there,” said Tutina , “on the rug, before his desk, on your right side, with your knees drawn up.”
Awkwardly, and with unsteadiness, and some pain, the older woman, tears in her eyes, humiliated, went to her hands and knees, and then to the position to which she had been directed.
“Hereafter,” said Tutina , “when you hear the command ‘Injection position’, in whatever language, you will instantly, and unquestioningly, assume this position.”

Kneel to the Coffle
The kajira kneels, lifting her left wrist to be cuffed and chained. Typically this is used with a group of kajirae, in which case, they will kneel in a line, one close behind the other.
“Kneel to be coffle,” said one of the men.
The girls knelt, closely, one behind the other, there were six wrist rings on the chain he carried. He placed the girl who had been whipped by Lady Sabina first in the coffle line.
“Left wrist coffle,” he said.
They lifted their left wrists, frightened. Interestingly, the man snapping the wrist rings on the girls’ left wrists did not put the first girl in the first ring, but the second. When the four maids were coffled there was, thus, an empty wrist ring both at the head and rear of the line.
“Stand, Slaves,” said the man. “Lower chain.”
The girls stood. Then, ordered, the lowered their wrists. They were then in line, standing, coffled .

Kneel to the Whip
The kajira faces away from the master and kneels, then bends forward with her arms beneath her along the outside of her breasts, wrists crossed, fully exposing her back. The basic position is kneeling with thighs closed, however, the master may command the thighs to be spread, as well.
She crawled to the point, trembling, where I had indicated.
‘Kneel to the whip’, I ordered her.
She knelt there, trembling, her head down to the grass, her wrists crossed beneath her, as though bound. I struck her thrice.
Blood Brothers of Gor, Page 137
“Kneel to the whip!” I cried. Terrified the girl scrambled to her knees and knelt down, making herself small, her head to the furs. Her wrists were crossed under her, as though bound. She trembled.
Rogue of Gor, Page 21
‘Kneel to the whip, Melpomene!’ she ordered.
Melpomene then, sobbing, knelt, her legs close together, her wrists held crossed under her, as though bound, her head down, touching the floor, the bow of her back exposed, a slave girl awaiting punishment.
Fighting Slave of Gor, Page 284
‘Kneel to the whip’, said Samos.
Piteously she knelt, a slave girl. Her wrists were crossed under her, as though bound, her head was to the floor, the bow of her back was exposed. She shuddered. I had little doubt but that this slave knew well, and much feared, the disciplining kiss of the Gorean slave lash.
Marauders of Gor, Page 13
I went to Targo, trembling, and knelt at his feet … I crossed my wrists beneath me and touched my head to the floor, exposing the bow of my back. It is the submissive posture of a slave girl who is to be punished. It is called Kneeling to the Whip.
Captive of Gor, Page 200
Elizabeth, trembling, lowered her head to the floor and crossed her wrists beneath her, kneeling, as it is said, to the whip.
Assassin of Gor, Page 46
Terrified, she, as the expression is, knelt to the whip, assuming the position of the slave girl who is to be punished, her wrists crossed beneath her as though bound and her head touching the floor, leaving the bow of her back exposed.
Priest Kings of Gor, Pages 201-202

“Kneel to the whip,” he said.
I obeyed. I put my head down, and, beneath my body, crossed my wrists, as though they were bound. My back was bowed, ready for whatever punishment he might see fit to administer to me.

Nadu, Position, the Position of the Pleasure Slave, or the Primary Slave Position
The kajira kneels with wide-spread thighs, back straight, chest high and up-thrust, her butt on her heels, her head held straight with lowered eyes. In the basic position, her hands rest on her thighs with the palms down. Variations include palms facing up, to indicate desire and vulnerability to the master, as well as wrists crossed in the front or the back, or arms up with hands clasped behind her neck in a Display mode.
“Nadu!” he snapped.
She swiftly turned, facing him, and dropped to her knees. She knelt back on her heels, her back straight, her hands on her thighs, her head up, her knees wide. It was the p osition of the pleasure slave.
Explorers of Gor, P age 77
She knelt in the position of the Pleasure Slave but her hands on her thighs had unconsciously, pleadingly, turned their palms to me, and she no longer knelt quite back on her heels. It was as though she begged to be allowed to lift and open her arms and rise and come to my arms. But as I looked upon her sternly she turned her palms again to her thighs, knelt back on her heels and dropped her head, holding her eyes as if by force of will fixed on the plastic beneath my sandals.
Priest Kings of Gor, Pages 234-235
He suddenly snapped his fingers and, in the swift double gesture of the Gorean Master, pointed to a place on the dirt floor before him, almost simultaneously turning his hand, spreading the first and index fingers, pointing downwards. I fled to him and knelt before him, my knees in the dirt, in the position of the pleasure slave, my head down, trembling.
Captive of Gor, P age 143
She knelt back on her heels, her back straight, her head up, her hands on her thighs. She knelt in the position of the house slave. I looked at her sternly. Swiftly, she spread her knees. She knelt now in the position of the pleasure slave, the slave of interest to men.
Fighting Slave of Gor, P age 346
The position of the Pleasure Slave, incidentally, differs from the position of both the free woman and the Tower Slave. The hands of a Pleasure Slave normally rest on her thighs but, in some cities, for example, Thentis , I believe, they are crossed behind her. More significantly, for the free woman’s hands may also rest on her thighs, there is a difference in the placement of the knees. In all these kneeling positions, incidentally, even that of the Pleasure Slave, the Gorean woman carries herself well; her back is straight and her chin is high. She tends to be vital and beautiful to look upon.”
Priest-Kings of Gor, Page 46
“Position!, ” I snapped.
Swiftly she knelt again, as she had been commanded earlier.
“You obey with the alacrity of a slave girl,” I observed.
“If I do not,” she said, “I could be punished as one, could I not?”
“Yes,” I said, “and would be.”
I walked about her, examining her, She kept her back very straight, and her head up. I was then again before her. I noted that the palms of her hands, so soft, so vulnerable, had turned on her thighs, so that they faced up. Among slave girls this is a common ways of signaling need, hel plessness, a desire to please.
Vagabonds of Gor, Page 209
“Come now, my pretty slaves”; said Ginger, “kneel straight, back straight, heads up. Back on your heel there! Spread those pretty knees. Yes, that is the way men like it. Put your hands, palms down, on your thighs, Good. Good. Excellent! ”
The girls now knelt in the coffle as pleasure slaves.

“Position!“, we heard.
Immediately, every girl on every platform assumed position. I looked about, as I could. Every girl that I saw, had assumed, as I had, the open- kneed position. It was required of them, as I gathered, as it was required of me. They were all attractive. I wondered, what sort of slaves we were, that we must kneel in this fashion.

It is customary in the kneeling position to remain a few feet back from the male. The kneeling position, itself, expresses the servitude of the slave, and her submission. The distance serves three major purposes. It symbolizes, in the distance, as well as in the differential height, the social inferiority of the slave to the master. It puts the slave in a position, where all of her, for the Master’s delight, can be seen. A kneeling woman is incredibly beautiful. It also puts enough space between the slave and the free male so that the releasing of his rapacity is then likely to require a decision, and is less likely to be simply, reflexively, triggered. This is regarded as being particularly important when the slave is in the presence of a male who is not her Master. The kneeling position, thus, interestingly, can occasionally provide a measure of security, if not a tenuous one, for the slave, tending to reduce, to some extent, the frequency in which, in a culture with such interpersonal proximities, she might be subjected to unauthorized rape. This same tiny measure of protection, of course, puts her in much greater danger from her real Master, for he, observing her, seeing her kneeling beautifully before him, can also delay in his considerations as to her suitable exploitations.

“Kneel, back on your heels,” said the trainer to the dark-haired woman, “ Straighten your back, suck in your gut, put your shoulders back, thrust out your breasts, spread your knees, widely, lift your chin, put your hands on your thighs. You are not going to be sold as a tower slave, Lady Tina. You are going to be sold as a pleasure slave.”

“Nadu!” he cried, loosening the whip coils on her throat. She swiftly knelt, back on her heels, back straight, head high, hands on her thighs, knees wide.
Explorers of Gor, Page 80
“Nadu!” said Tajima, sharply.
The girl struggled to nadu, kneeling back on her heels, her head up, her back straight, the palms of her hands down on her thighs. She did not make eye contact with any of the free men, but kept her gaze forward.
It is a beautiful position.
“Split your knees,” said Tajima.
“No!” said Pertinax .
“Now!” said Tajima.
The girl spread her knees.
“Wider!” said Tajima. She was, after all, a collar-girl.
The former Miss Wentworth complied, quickly, docilely, with Tajima’s command. She had learned obedience to men, slave obedience, in the stable, at the hands of the grooms.
“Please!” protested Pertinax .
“Stay as you are,” cautioned Tajima.
The slave remained in the adjusted nadu, as directed. It was a common form of nadu, one almost invariably expected of a particular sort of slave, the pleasure slave.
Swordsmen of Gor, Pages 382-383
“Nadu,” whispered the taverner , and the girl went to position, back on heels, knees wide, back straight, the palms of her hands down on her thighs. She kept her head down. Commonly, in nadu, the head is up, the gaze straight ahead, that the beauty of her features be displayed, and that she be in a position to better detect the slightest nuances of her master, either in tone or expression, but neither the taverner nor the stranger exacted this small adjustment.
Mariners of Gor, Page 10
“You may do obeisance, my dear,” said Kliomenes .
The girl rose to her feet and went to Kliomenes . She knelt before him, on the dais, and put her head down. Gently, softly, she licked and kissed his feet. She then rose again to her feet, backed away, and then, on the tiles, again knelt. She put the palms of her hands on the tiles, and lowered her head to the tiles. Then she straightened up, her back straight, assuming the position of the pleasure slave, though keeping her head bowed, deferentially.
Rogue of Gor, Page 299
She knelt before him, in her collar, in the basic position of the Gorean pleasure slave, back on her heels, her back straight, her head up, the palms of her hands on her thighs, her knees spread, widely.
Prize of Gor, Page 116
“Spread your knees,” he said, “kneel straight, back on your heels, head up, palms of your hands down on your thighs.”
The slave began to tremble.
“Head up!” he said. “Do you wish to be put in a high collar, to keep your head up?”
“No, Master,” she said, quickly.
Such collars are common with Kur pets. They are also used from time to time in slave training.
“Do you know in what position you have been placed?” he asked.
Certainly this was a rhetorical question, for she would have learned this position in the pleasure cylinder, and Cabot, himself, in the pleasure cylinder, near Lake Fear, and elsewhere, had put her in it often enough.
“The position of a Gorean pleasure slave,” she said.
Kur of Gor, Pages 662-663
The position of the pleasure slave, of course, is also respectful, but it is also provocative, and inviting. It must leave no doubt in the observer’s mind as to what sort of slave she is. The palms of her hands are usually down on her thighs, and her head up, but, if she is petitioning caresses, as is not uncommon, the palms are usually up, the backs of the hands on the thighs.
…
The palms, then, so offered to the master, with their exposed, sweet, sensitive cupping, the backs of the hands down on the thighs, as though bound to them, as though not permitted to leave them without permission, present a sign not difficult to read. Too, at the same time, the girl’s head is usually lowered. This makes clear her humility and need, and how much she is at the mercy of the master, for the least touch.
Swordsmen of Gor, Pages 180-181
Variations, of course, occur. Sometimes, perhaps in markets, the girl will kneel with her wrists crossed behind her, as though bound, or will have her hands clasped behind the back of her head, or the back of her neck. This lifts the breasts, nicely.
Swordsmen of Gor, Page 181
In the position of the pleasure slave the woman kneels as an obvious pleasure slave. There is no doubt as to what she is for. Masters may, of course, instruct their slave as to how to kneel before them. Most commonly she kneels back on her heels, her head up her back straight, and the palms of her hands down on her thighs. In the position of the common slave, or the tower slave, on the continent, the knees are held closely together; in the position of the pleasure slave, they are separated, spread vulnerably. This accentuates the softness of her thighs. As mentioned, there is to be no doubt as to what she is for. Whereas most commonly the head is raised, that the master may observe the beauty of her features and read her tiniest expression, and note how beautifully her throat is encircled with his collar, some masters prefer the slave’s head to be lowered, submissively. Indeed, some masters do not permit a slave to look into their eyes, unless commanded to do so. Some masters, too, prefer for the hands to be held behind the back, as though bound, the head either up, or lowered, submissively.
Rebels of Gor, Pages 409-410
Cabot had then fed her by hand, she in primary slave position, and with her knees spread, as she was that sort of slave. He also, in hand-feeding her, had required that she keep her hands, palms down, firmly, on her thighs.
Kur of Gor, Page 400
“Position,” said another of the men.
Ellen, the beast having released her hair, went to position, kneeling, knees wide, back straight, head up, hands on thighs.
“A pleasure slave,” said one of the men.
“Obviously,” said another.
Ellen wondered if she should have kept her knees closely together, before Mirus , but she had naturally, instantaneously, not even thinking about it, assumed the wide-kneed position.
Prize of Gor, Pages 415 – 416
“Position,” said the auctioneer to Ellen.
And then Ellen, tears running down her cheeks, knelt appropriately before the men, as what she was, a Gorean pleasure slave, back on heels, back straight, head up, hands down on thighs, knees widely spread.
Prize of Gor, Page 491
Her discomfiture amused the human, Peisistratus. “She is kajira?” he inquired of Cabot.
“Yes,” said Cabot.
“Why is she not in position?” inquired Peisistratus.
…
He removed the switch from his belt.
She regarded the implement disbelievingly.
“Kneel,” said Peisistratus to the girl, “now, instantly! Back on your heels. Spread your knees!”
“My knees!” she cried.
“Yes,” he said, “widely. More widely! Straighten your back, place your hands, palms down, on your thighs, lift your head, look straight ahead!”
“Never!” she cried.
And then the switch fell savagely upon her, twice.
She screamed in misery.
…
“Up, slut, position, position!” said Peisistratus.
Wildly, frantically, sobbing, tears streaming from her eyes, in pain, the brunette knelt before Peisistratus, in position, as required.
“Keep your hands on your thighs!” snapped Peisistratus, for she had dared to move to cover herself.
She complied instantly.
Cabot was pleased to note this alacrity.
Too, he was pleased to see her in position.
She looked well in position, in the position of a Gorean female slave, indeed, rather, in the position of a Gorean female slave of a particular sort, the Gorean female pleasure slave.
Kur of Gor, Pages 119-120
“Enough,” I said. “Position.”
She knelt then before me, as before, back on her heels, head up, back straight, the palms of her hands down on her thighs.
Mariners of Gor, Page 154
Suddenly one fellow said, sharply, “Position!” Instantly, reflexively, Iole and Alcinoë, frightened, knelt, back on their heels, knees spread, back straight, head up, looking ahead, neither to the left or right, the palms of their hands down, firmly, on their thighs.
Mariners of Gor, Page 299
“Position!” I said.
“Master!” protested several.
“Need a command be repeated?” I asked.
With cries of misery, and sobs, the slaves, or most, went to position.
“Hold the lamp,” I said to Alcinoë .
She took the lamp.
“Please, no,” wept slave after slave.
I drew away blankets, which had not fallen about the slaves.
“Backs straight,” I said. “Lift your heads. Peer straight ahead. Shake the hair behind your shoulders.”
I looked about, from one slave to another.
It was pleasant to do so.
“Shoulders back,” I said. “Suck in your belly. Palms of your hands down on your thighs, firmly. Feel them there.”
“Please, Master,” sobbed a girl. “We are high slaves!”
“Many of us were once of high caste!” said another.
“Split your knees,” I said.
“Master!” wept a girl.
“Wider,” I said.
Mariners of Gor, Pages 337-338
She was before me, in position, kneeling back on her heels, her back straight, her head up, looking ahead, the palms of her hands down on her thighs, her knees spread, this making clear the nature of her bondage.
Mariners of Gor, Page 565
“Position,” I said. She went to position, kneeling back on her heels, her back straight her belly in, her shoulders back, her head up the palms of her hands down on her thighs. One does not break “position” without permission.
Smugglers of Gor, Page 50
“Position,” called a fellow himself descending from the ship splashing, and wading to shore. So, cold, wet, and shivering, miserable, we went to “position,” kneeling back on our heels, our backs straight, our heads up looking ahead, our knees spread, as the slaves we were, the palms of our hands down on our thighs. “Ai!” I cried, in misery, lashed at the side of the neck by a switch. He had come up behind me, from having brought a small barrel to shore. “Are you not to be in position, your eyes forward?” he inquired. “Yes, Master!” I said. “Forgive me, Master!” I had twisted about, just a little from time to time, to watch the men. “Ha!” he said. “And you two, your eyes are now forward!” “Yes, Master!” they said. Then they cried out, “Forgive me, Master!” I heard their cries, to my right, as the switch struck twice. I was not the only one, it seemed, who had been curious. The side of my neck stung. I had been reminded that a lapse from position, however slight is not acceptable.
Smugglers of Gor, Page 91
“Position!” he snapped. Instantly, reflexively, I went to position, kneeling back on my heels, back straight, head up hands palm down on thighs, looking forward, not meeting his eyes, knees spread.

Obeisance, or Prostration
There many ways that an Obeisance can be performed, but there are three which are most common. It should be noted that when performing any Obeisance, the kajira may perform lifting motions of her hips, or the spreading of her thighs, to indicate her need.
First Obeisance – The kajira kneels in nadu, then bends forward until her forehead is touching the ground, her hands placed palms down to either side of her head. This is alternatively known as the ‘Prostration’, or ‘Common Obeisance’ or the ‘Basic Obeisance’.
I knelt before the guest, putting the palms of my hands on the floor and my head to the tiles.
Kajira of Gor, Page 305
Swiftly we assumed a common form of slave obeisance, kneeling, the palms of our hands on the ground, our heads to the ground. Many masters, though it tends to be rather associated usually with given cities, require this position of their girls, usually when they first enter his presence or find themselves, as in a room which he has entered, in his presence. She is then, usually, when given permission, permitted to lift her head, but is to remain kneeling before him, beautifully, in a standard position, her knees closed if she is a house or tower slave, her knees open if she was the sort of slave I was, whatever sort of slave that was supposed to be.
Dancer of Gor, Page 115
“First obeisance position,” snapped Barzak . “Beg his forgiveness!”
Instantly Ellen went to the first obeisance position, head down, palms of her hands on the cement. “Please forgive me, Master,” she begged, frightened.
“Kneel up, first position,” said Barzak .
Ellen went to first position, with all its revelatory delights.
Prize of Gor , Page 255
In first obeisance position, often assumed by a slave in the presence of a free man, she kneels with her head to the ground, and the palms of her hands down on the ground on either side of her head.
Swordsmen of Gor, Page 195
“First obeisance position,” I said.
She put the black wine to the side on the deck, and put her head to the boards, before me, her hands beside the sides of her head.
Mariners of Gor, Page 141
“First obeisance position!” I snapped.
Moaning, frightened, the six girls went instantly to first obeisance position, kneeling, their heads to the deck, the palms of their hands beside their head.
Mariners of Gor, Page 245
“First obeisance position,” I informed the slaves.
Both then went to first obeisance position, kneeling, head to the floor, palms of the hands down on the floor, at the sides of their head.
Mariners of Gor, Pages 428-429
“First obeisance position, “ I said, unpleasantly.
Instantly, frightened, she went to her knees, her head to the floor, the palms of her hands on the floor, beside her head.

“First obeisance position,” I said.
Instantly the slave assumed first obeisance position, kneeling, head to the floor, the palms of her hands on the floor, beside her lowered head.

“Thank you, Master,” said Cecily, freed from the chain. She went gratefully, unbidden, to first obeisance position, kneeling, head to the ground, palms of her hands beside her head.
Rebels of Gor, Page 410
Momentarily, she seemed about to cover her body with her hands, perhaps a reflex dating back to the time of her freedom, but withdrew her hands instantly, and swiftly, unbidden, frightened, knelt in first obeisance position, head to the floor, the palms of her hands on the floor, on each side of her head.
Rebels of Gor, Page 487
“Common position of obeisance,” he said.
Immediately, kneeling, she put her head to the floor, the palms of her hands on the floor, beside her head. In this position the knees are closed. It is a position commonly assumed by a slave when a man enters a room. To be sure, this varies from city to city. In some cities all that is required is the common kneeling position, instantly assumed. In other cities, a complete bellying, instantly assumed, is required. Such things may differ, of course, from master to master.
Prize of Gor, Page 86
“Obeisance!” snapped the guardsman.
Instantly Ellen, and her sister slaves, went to first obeisance position, head down to the cement.
Prize of Gor, Page 234
When we appeared before her cage, she put her head down to the blanket, the palms of her hands on the floor of the cage, beside her head, It is a lovely gesture of obeisance, and required by many masters of their women.

I pointed to the sand before me.
She immediately, frightened, dropped to her knees and again put her head down to the sand, the palms of her hands, too, on the sand.
Vagabonds of Gor, Page 205
At his entrance Susan put the palms of her hands on the floor and lowered her head to the tiles, assuming a position of slave obeisance common with her in the presence of her master.
Kajira of Gor, Page 157
Second Obeisance – The kajira goes prone to her belly, placing her hands on either side of her head, palms down.
“Second obeisance position,” he said.
Ellen went prone, before him, her hands at the sides of her head.
Prize of Gor, Page 191
“Return me to my master!” she cried, putting herself to her belly, pleading, in second obeisance position, before Targo.
Prize of Gor, Page 226
The usual second obeisance position has the slave go to her belly, her hands on either side of her head.
Swordsmen of Gor, Page 195
“Now,” I said, “to second obeisance position.”
“Please,” she protested, her head to the deck.
“Must a command be repeated?” I inquired.
“No!” she said.
The repetition of a command is often a cause for discipline, and she was well aware of what that might involve.
She was now on her belly before me, her hands at the sides of her head.
Mariners of Gor, Page 153
It was also noted that now, before Pani warriors, they did not kneel, but prostrated themselves, putting themselves instantly, trembling, to second obeisance position, prone, hands to the sides of their head, eyes to the ground.
Mariners of Gor, Page 421
Third Obeisance or Abject Obeisance – The kajira goes to her belly before the master and crawls forward, arms outstretched until on either side of his foot, remaining there as she continues forward until she can kiss and lick his feet, then lifts his foot to place it on her head. When the master lifts pressure, she returns his foot to the ground and again, kisses and licks it, before turning her head to rest her cheek on his foot, or, if given permission to do so, she may withdraw on her belly and return to nadu.
This final form of Obeisance is not so-named in the Gor novels, where it is only referred to as an ‘Obeisance’. However, it is explicitly described, and since it goes further than the First or Second Obeisances, I have designated it as the Third Obeisance, or ‘Abject Obeisance’, to distinguish from the first two types.
She put the palms of her hands upon the tiles, and lowered her head to the tiles. Then she straightened up, her back straight, assuming the position of a pleasure slave, though keeping her head bowed, deferentially.
Rogue of Gor, Page 229
“There are many ways to perform obeisance, ” I said.
“I am a free woman,” she said, “I know none of them.”
“I shall instruct you briefly in three,” I said.
“First kneel before me, back on your heels, yes, with your knees wide, wider, your hands on your thighs, your back straight, your breasts out, good, your belly in, good, and now lower your head in deference, in submission.”
“Now that,” I said, “may not be exactly a form of obeisance, for authorities do not all agree, but for our purposes we shall count it as one. It is, at any rate, a beautiful position, and it is, certainly, a common position of slave submission.”
“Now” I said, “and this is clearly a form of obeisance ; bend forward and put your head to the mat, the palms of your hands on the mat. Good. Now lift your head little and come forward, substantially keeping the position. Forward a little more.”
“But then my face will be at your feet,” she said,” My lips will be over them!”
“Yes,” I said, “Good, now, put your head down and lick and kiss my feet.”
“I am a free Woman!” s he said.
“You are a woman,” I said, “now softly lingeringly, and lovingly, Good.”
“I am not a slave,” she said.
“All women are slaves,” I said,” Imagine what this would be like if you were truly a collared slave.”
She gasped.
“Now” I said, “for a third form of obeisance. You may belly to me.”
“I do not understand,” she whispered.
“There are various forms of bellying, “ I said, “and bellying may be suitably and pleasingly combined with other forms of floor movements, approaching the m aster on all fours, turning to your sides and back, writhing before him, and so on. We will take a very simple variation, suitable for an ignorant free female who has not yet even begun to discover the depths of her sexuality.”
She looked up at me.
“On your belly,” I said.
She backed off a bit , and went to her belly, her hair was before her face, as she now on her belly before me looking up at me.
“Now inch forward,” I said, ” remaining low on your belly, and when you reach my feet, once again, as before, lifting your head a little, tenderly and humbly, and beautifully, as though you were a slave , lick and kiss them. Good. Good. Now take my foot and place it gently on your head. Very good. Now place it again on the mat, and kiss it again. Good. You may now belly back a little, humbly. I have not yet given you permission to rise of course.”
Mercenaries of Gor, Pages 409-410
She lowered herself to her belly and , holding my ankles gently with her hands, covered my feet with kisses. Her lips, and her tongue, were warm and wet.
Savages of Gor, Page 13
My head was down, my hair over his feet. I was naked, frightened. I had been summoned into his presence, and had performed obeisance at the end of the long carpet, leading to the dais. I had, then, when permitted, approached the dais, head down, on all fours. I had climbed, on all fours, up the broad, carpeted steps of the dais, and now lay, on my belly, half on its surface, the lower half of my body, my right knee flexed, across the final two steps before its height.
“You lick and kiss well,” he said.
“Thank you, Master”, I said.
“Like the other females of Earth”, he said.
“Yes, Master”, I said. I gathered I was not the first Earth female who had come this way.
“You may continue”, he said.
“Thank you, Master”, I said.
“It is not unpleasant”, he said.
“A slave is grateful if her Master is not displeased with her”, I said.
“You are very pretty”, he said.
“Thank you, Master”, I said.
“You wear a collar,” he said.
“Yes Master”, I said.
“Whose collar is it?“, he asked.
“Yours Master”, I said.
“And whose is that?“, he asked. “The collar of my master, Hendow, of Brundisium , master of the tavern of Hendow , on Dock Street, in Brundisium,” I said. There was a slave whip across his knees.
Dancer of Gor, Page 139
The dancing of the female before the male, that she be found pleasing and he be pleased, is one of the most profound lessons in all human biology. Others are when she kneels before him, when she kisses his feet, when she performs obeisance, when she knows herself subject, truly to his whip .
Dancer of Gor, Page 193
It is not uncommon for a kajira to simply be given the command to ‘Stand’, or to ‘Stand as a Slave’. This is not an explicit position in the Gor novels, however, it is spoken of and suggested that it has particular meaning. The girl does not merely ‘stand up’, she stands with beauty and with the attitude knowing that she’s the most beautiful, most desirable creature present and she demonstrates that in her stance.
She stands straight, belly in, hands on her hips or behind her neck, head held high, perhaps even with arrogant disdain. Her hips are canted so that one is out-thrust and that leg rises so that the girl’s toes are on point..
“He looked me over. I blushed, under Gorean appraisal, I only wore my tether.
‘Stand as a slave.’ he said. I stood beautifully, back straight, head high, belly sucked in , hip turned. No woman can stand more beautifully than as a Gorean slave girl.
‘Excellent,’ said Ladle tender, smacking his lips
‘Master is pleased,’ I said.
‘Yes,’ he said
‘The slave too, is then pleased,’ I said.”

Standing Examination, Inspection Position, or Display
The kajira stands with legs wide apart, head tilted up and her hands clasped behind her neck, elbows out to the side. This position is used to examine the kajira in a fashion which precludes her from obscuring any portion of her body.
The auctioneer did not strike her with his whip. He merely took her arms and lifted them, so that the position chain, attached to each side of the sales collar lay across her her upper arms. Then he had her clasp her hands behind the back of her neck, so that the chain, on each side of the collar, was in the crook of her arms, and she was exposed in such a way that she could be properly exhibited.
Explorers of Gor, Page 36
“Have that one stand, to be examined,” said a man.
“Cotina , stand, examination position!” snapped Targo.
Cotina stood, her legs widely spread, her head back, her hands clasped behind the back of her neck. It is hard for a woman to move from this position and she must be concerned with her balance. The subtle adjustments and tenseness required to maintain her balance keep her even more helplessly in place, and these adjustments and this tenseness will also be expressed in her posture, providing body-language cues bespeaking obedience and servitude. Too, obviously this posture bares her vulnerably, and her hands cannot interfere with the examination. The position of the arms, the hands clasped behind the back of the neck, or, sometimes, behind the back of the head, lifts the bosom, exhibiting it beautifully.
Prize of Gor, Page 247
“Assume the standard position for the examination of a standing slave,” said Portus Canio .
Ellen, in her tunic, puzzled, stood then before him, her legs widely, painfully spread. The split hems of the tunic, slit at the sides, permitted this position. Ellen clasped her hands behind the back of her head, and held her head up and back, in this position looking rather at the height of the great portal, leading into the barn area, from the platform outside. In this position it is convenient to examine the slave. She cannot easily move without losing her balance. The position of her hands prevents her from interfering with the examination. The raised head, held back, makes it difficult for her to know, or guess, the position of the examiner’s hands, where they are, and what they might do, for example, how and when she might be touched, caressed, or tested. Needless to say, this position is normally assumed when the slave is nude.
Prize of Gor, Pages 309 – 310
Several of the slaves were standing, in examination position, legs widely spread, hands behind the back of their neck, or head.
Mariners of Gor, Page 333
The hands of the women, as directed, were clasped behind the back of their neck. This immobilizes the hands and lifts the breasts nicely. In this way one’s view is less obstructed. Too, this stance makes it less likely that the woman, yielding to a foolish lapse, will try to shield her body with her hands. A common examination position in markets is to have the woman stand upright with her legs widely spread, the hands clasped behind the back of the neck or behind the back of the head.
The spreading of the legs makes it harder for her to move and easier for her to be caressed, sometimes unexpectedly. Some assessors will put the woman to the floor and she will find herself struggling, startled, perhaps only half comprehendingly, to respond to a rapidly issued series of commands. She is being put through slave paces. This is a device for displaying her body in a diversity of aspects. And the paces might occasionally be halted, that a given pose might be the better assessed.

What of the girl ordered to assume “examination position,” standing, legs widely spread, hands held behind the back of her head or neck?
Rebels of Gor, Page 328
In inspection position one such as she would normally be stripped, and standing with her feet spread, and her hands clasped either behind the back of her neck, or behind her head. In this way the breasts are lifted nicely, and, given the position of the hands, one has no interference to one’s vision, and, similarly, one may, perhaps walking about her, test her for firmness, and for vitality, and such things.

Submission or Collaring
The woman kneels in nadu before the master, raising her arms with crossed wrists up and to him, her head lowered.
In a formal Submission ritual, the woman then speaks the words, “I submit myself to you”. The master may then choose to accept her submission and keep her, or reject it. If he chooses to accept her submission, he states, “I accept your submission.” This is considered, in the Gor novels, to be a legally binding act of the woman entering into slavery, and ownership by the master. For this reason, it is also sometimes called, the Collaring Position.
She had risen and walked across the room, her feet bare on the stone floor, and dropped to her knees before me, lowering her head and lifting and extending her hands to me, the wrists crossed. The ritual significance of the gesture of submission was not lost on me; her wrists were offered to me, as if for binding.
Tarnsman of Gor, Page 67
Then, to my astonishment, the daughter of the Ubar Marlenus , daughter of the Ubar of Ar, knelt before me, a simple warrior of Ko-ro-ba , and lowered her head, lifting and extending her arms, the wrists crossed. It was that same simple ceremony that Sana had performed before me in the chamber of my father, back at Ko-ro-ba – the submission of the captive female.
Without raising her eyes from the ground, the daughter of the Ubar said in a clear, distinct voice: “I submit myself.” Later I wished that I had had binding fiber to lash her so innocently proffered wrists. I was speechless for a moment, but then, remembering that harsh Gorean custom required me either to accept the submission or slay the captive, I took her wrists in my hands and said, “I accept your submission.”
I then lifted her gently to her feet.
Tarnsman of Gor, Pages 93-94
“Submit!” he boomed at the large, blond girl and, terrified, almost leaping, she lowered her head, thrusting forward her hands, wrists crossed.

She came and stood before me, and then dropped to her knees, resting back on her heels. She lowered her head and extended her arms, wrists crossed, the submission of the Gorean female.

“Assume the posture of female submission,” I told her.
She did so, kneeling back on her heels, her arms extended, wrists crossed, her head between them, down. She was weeping.

He twisted her hair more. She winced, her back bent painfully.
“Do you wish me to submit to you now?” she begged.
“Do so,” said he.
She fell to her knees before him, and lifted her head to regard him. “I will be your slave,” she said. Then, she knelt back on her heels, lowered her head, and lifted and extended her arms, wrists crossed, as though for binding. She was very beautiful. “I am your slave,” she said, “- Master.”
Hunters of Gor, Page 16
“Submit,” I told them.
They knelt before me, back on their heels, head down, arms lifted and extended, wrists crossed as though for binding.
“I submit myself,” said each, in turn.
They need not be bound. They need not be collared. They need not even have spoken. The posture of submission itself, assumed by them before me, constituted them my slaves. They were now mine.
Hunters of Gor, Page 182
Then suddenly one girl turned from the forest and fled to a crewman, kneeling before him, back on her heels, head down, arms extended, wrists crossed as though for binding. He gestured that she should rise and get into a longboat. She did so, his slave.
Hunters of Gor, Page 310
“She is yours,” he said. He took his strap off her throat, and unbound her hands.
“Submit,” I told her. She knelt before me, back on her heels, arms extended, head down, between her arms, wrists crossed, as though for binding.
Explorers of Gor, Page 74
“Submit, ” he said.
She looked at me, wildly, piteously. I aided her. I showed her how to kneel back on her heels, her arms extended to him, wrists crossed, her head down, between her arms.
“ Say, ‘I submit’ ,” I said.
“I submit,’ she said.
He bound her wrists tightly before her body.

“Submit,” he said.
I could not disobey him. I fell to my knees before him, resting on my heels, extending my arms to him, wrists crossed, as though for binding, my head lowered, between my arms.

“Collar!” I snapped.
Instantly she faced me, holding her hands slightly behind her, and lifted her chin.

Sula
The kajira lays prone on her back, legs straight and spread wide, with her arms flat along her sides, her palms facing up.
“Sula, Kajira!” said the man.
She slid her legs from under her and lay on her back, her hands at her sides, palms up, legs open.
Explorers of Gor, P age 77
Why had he not, at least, issued the “Sula!” command? That was one of several commands she had been trained to respond to instantly. Upon hearing this command, the slave immediately assumes a supine position, her hands at her sides, palms up, her legs open.

Tower
The woman kneels with her thighs pressed comfortably together, butt on her heels, with straight back and hands placed upon her thighs, her head straight.
She had not prepared herself a portion but, after I had been served, had knelt silently to one side, back on her heels in the position of a Tower Slave, a slave to whom largely domestic duties would be allotted in the Gorean apartment cylinders.
Priest-Kings of Gor, Page 45
The position of the Tower Slave, in which Vika knelt, differs from that of a free woman only in the position of the wrists which are held before her and, when not occupied, crossed as though for binding…The position of the Pleasure Slave, incidentally, differs from the position of both the free woman and the Tower Slave. The hands of a Pleasure Slave normally rest on her thighs but, in some cities, for example, Thentis, I believe, they are crossed behind her. More significantly, for the free woman’s hands may also rest on her thighs, there is a difference in the placement of the knees. In all these kneeling positions, incidentally, even that of the Pleasure Slave, the Gorean woman carries herself well; her back is straight and her chin is high. She tends to be vital and beautiful to look upon.
Priest Kings of Gor, Pages 46-47
Ulrick had told me that certain kinds of slaves, house slaves, ‘tower slaves,’ and such, whatever they were, might kneel with their knees together.
Dancer of Gor, Page 85
“Oh,” she said.
The position of the tower slave, in most cities, is very similar to that of the pleasure slave. The major difference is that the tower slave, whose duties are commonly, primarily, domestic, kneels with her knees in a closed position, whereas the pleasure slave, in a symbolic recognition of the fuller nature of her bondage, and its most significant aspects, kneels with them in open position. The tower slave, of course, like any other slave, is fully at the disposal of the master, in any and every way. The distinction between the tower slave and the pleasure slave, though honored in some markets, some specializing in girls sold primarily for housekeeping purposes and others in girls sold primarily for the pleasures of men, is not really a hard and fast distinction; it is not absolute; indeed, it can even be transitory. A girl who is ordered to open her knees, or who finds them kicked apart, for example, realizes that she has now become a pleasure slave. Similarly a girl in one context may function as one kind of slave and in another context, as another sort. Serving supper to a young man and his mother, for example, the girl may appear merely efficient and deferential. She kneels nearby, her knees closed. After the mother departs, however, she may kneel differently before the young man, with her knees open, his.
Blood Brothers of Gor, Page 107
The Gorean male at ease, usually sits cross-legged and the female kneels, resting back on her heels. The position of the Tower slave … differs from that of a free woman only in the position of the wrists which are held before her and, when not occupied, crossed as thought for binding. A free woman’s wrists are never so placed.
Priest-Kings of Gor, Page 46
She kept her knees tightly together before the free woman. Had she knelt before a man she would probably have had to keep them open, even if they were brutally kicked apart, a lesson to her, to be more sensitive as to before whom she knelt.
Magicians of Gor, Page 18
“Your knees!” said the Lady Bina.
“Mistress?” said the slave.
“Should they not be spread?”
“She is in the presence of a free woman,” said Cabot. “It is thus appropriate that she kneels in the Tower position.”
Kur of Gor, Page 342
They had apparently all been warned, for, though each was a pleasure slave, they knelt in the modest, charming position of what, on the continent, would be referred to as the position of the tower slave, their knees closely together. I did not doubt but what this was because a free woman was to be present, Sumomo . Their backs were straight and the palms of their hands were down, on their thighs.

Usage
The kajira kneels in nadu, then bends forward, placing her cheek to the ground, before placing her clasped hands behind her neck, and lifting her butt as high as she can while keeping her knees on the ground.
He knelt me there.
“Put your head down, to the floor,” he said. “Clasp your hands, firmly, behind the back of your neck.”
“Yes, Master,” I moaned.
He was then behind me. He put his hands, under my arms, on my breasts, sweetly and firmly. Then he moved his hands back, caressing my flanks. My head was down. My fingers were together, behind the back of my neck. I was in his collar. It was steel, I could not remove it. I belonged to him. My body hurt, from his whip, that of my master. My head hurt, from my hair, where I had been conducted, unceremoniously, to this location.
“Please, Master,” I sobbed. “Not like this! Not you, please!”
“The slave is pretty,” he remarked.
“Oh!” I cried. “Oh!”
“You have a lovely ass,” he said.
“Ohhh !” I said.
“You may thank me,” he said.

Whipping Position
The kajira turns away from the master, lifting her crossed wrists over her head to make them convenient for binding to a tree branch or rafter, or some other highly located binding point, so that she may be whipped.
In moments the slave, stripped, her wrists crossed and bound, and fastened over her head, to a stout, overhanging branch, that her beauty might be protected, that she might not be dashed against a post or tree trunk, was in whip position.

Blanket
The kajira is covered with a blanket, or any other suitable piece of cloth, such as a cloak. Under this condition, she is may not make a sound, move, or rise up from her position.
I then threw the second blanket, the top blanket over her, covering her completely. When a blanket, or cloak, or covering of any sort, is thrown over a slave like this she may not speak or rise. She must remain as she is, silent, until the master, or some free man, lifts the covering away.
Explorers of Gor, Page 94
Bound By Masters Will
The kajira is commanded to a position, and must hold it, as if bound tightly to that position. This is also known as the ‘Will Bond’.
“She wore the `bonds of the master’s will.’ Grunt had put her in them. She could not rise to her feet. Yet there was not a rope or strap on her body. She was `bound by the master’s will.’ She could not move from this position unless, at the word of a free person, she was freed from it. To break the position otherwise is to be instantly slain.”
Blood Brothers of Gor, Page 248
“Your hands are now bound behind your back,” he said.
“Yes, Master,” I said. I must now keep my hands or wrists in contact with one another, and behind my back. I was now “bound by the master’s will.” I could not separate my hands or wrists from one another now without permission.
Dancer of Gor, Page 227
Bracelets or Lesha
The kajira extends her crossed wrists towards the master while lifting her head to bare and display her neck, making herself readily accessible for binding, collaring, leashing, or her collar to be read. This is not considered to be a distinct, specific position, but rather, a command to present neck and wrists, since it occurs in both the kneeling, and standing positions, and the action is the same for both ‘Bracelets’ and ‘Lesha’.
“Bracelets,” he snapped.
She put her head in the air and placed her hands behind her back.
Hunters of Gor, Page 146
He had removed a pair of light bracelets, joined by about five inches of light chain, from his pouch.
“Slave bracelets,” he said. “Turn around, facing the door, your hands behind your back.”
Kajira of Gor, Page 132
“Lesha ,” snapped the second officer to the blond girl.
She spun from facing him, and lifted her chin, turning her head to the left, placing her wrists behind her, as though for snapping them into slave bracelets.
Explorers of Gor, Page.76
“Lesha ,” he said. Immediately, responsive to this command, I flung my wrists behind me, separated by some two inches, and lifted my chin, my head turned to the left. I felt slave bracelets flung, snapping shut, on my wrists. I was braceleted. In another moment I was leashed. “Precede me,” said the guard. I went before him.

He approached the slave and indicated that she should stand. He then said, very sharply, “Lesha !”
Instantly the girl turned away from him, lifted her head, turned it to the left, and placed her small wrists, crossed, behind her back.

Crawl
The kajira goes prone, and crawls on her belly to her master’s feet, or wherever she has been directed. Her belly remains in contact with the ground, her head stays down, eyes averted.
I pointed to the stones at my feet. ” Crawl,” I said, in Gorean. The girl slipped to her belly, and, as a slave girl, crawled to my feet. She put her lips to my foot; I felt her hair over it.
Tribesmen of Gor, page 78
“I crawl to my Master on my belly,” she said, “and beg for his touch.” I smiled. I, a guest in the tent, now stood to her, of course, as her Master. Such girls come with the price of the lodging.

This command is given to instruct the slave to present her collar so that it may be more easily examined and read.

Gagged by the Master’s Will
This is similar to being ‘Bound by the Master’s Will ’ , except that this specifically references the kajira being silenced through the command to do so, rather than being immobilized in a position.
There are many varieties of slave gags, and such. The simplest device for attaining this end is when she is “gagged by her master’s will,” which simply means that she is prohibited from speaking until given permission to do so.
Vagabonds of Gor , Page 321
“I did not allow her to speak,” said Callias .
I nodded. She had been then, as it is said, gagged by the master’s will.

Gorean Bow or Love Bow
This is not actually a position or command from the Gor novels, but rather, a position which the master places a kajira into, perhaps for display, binding, dance, or usage. The kajira’s body is bent over backwards, supported in the middle of her back, and then her wrists and ankles are secured, holding her in this position, her body arched in a taut bow.
Some girls have the flexibility to achieve this position on their own, but in the Gor novels, it’s always the master who bends the girl backwards.
Under the torchlight Phyllis Robertson was now on her knees, the Warrior at her side, holding her behind the small of the back. Her head went farther back, as her hands moved on the arms of the Warrior, as though once to press him away, and then again to draw him closer, and her head then touched the furs, her body a cruel, helpless bow in his hands, and then, her head down, it seemed she struggled and her body straightened itself until she lay, save for her head and heels, on his hands clasped behind her back, her arms extended over her head to the fur behind her. At this point, with a clash of cymbals, both dancers remained immobile.
Assassin of Gor, Page 187
“Ivar Forkbeard!” cried the man holding the helmet. He lifted the helmet to Ivar. Over the helmet Ivar doubled a nd held his fist, making the sign of Thor. Then he drank, a handed to me the helmet. I poured a drop from the helm to the reddish, muddied earth. “Ta- Sardar-Gor,” said I, “the Priest-Kings of Gor.” I looked into the blood. I saw nothing. Only the blood of a Kur. Then I drank. “May the ferocity of the Kur be in you!” cried the man. Then, taking the helmet back, and throwing his head back, he drained it, blood running at the side of his mouth, trickling to the fur at the collar of his jacket. Men about cheered. “Come,” said Ivar to us. “Look,” said a man nearby. He was cutting, with a ship’s knife, a ring of reddish alloy from the arm of a fallen Kur. The knife could not cut the ring. He lifted it, obdurate and bloody. It was the only ornament the beast wore. “A high officer,” said Ivar. “Yes,” said the man. Behind him stood a blond slave girl, naked, her hair falling to her waist. I gathered she belonged to him. “We are victorious!” said the man to her, brandishing the ring. Over her iron collar she wore a heavy leather Kur collar, high, heavily sewn, with its large ring. He thrust her two wrists, before her body, into the ring he had cut from the Kur. He then tied them inside, and to, the ring. He then, from his belt, took a long length of binding fiber and, doubling it, looped it, securing it at its center to the ring, leaving two long ends. He then threw her, on her back, over the body, head down, of the fallen Kur. He took the two loose ends of the binding fiber and, taking them under the body of the fallen Kur, dragged her wrists, elbows bent, over and above her head; he then, bending her knees, tied one of the loose ends about her left ankle, and the other about her right. It was the Gorean love bow. He then, regarding her, cut the Kur collar from her throat with the ship’s knife. He threw it aside. She now wore only one collar, his. She closed her eyes. She moved, lying across it, on the body of the Kur. It was still warm. “It is we who are victorious,” said he. She opened her eyes. “It is you who are victorious, Master,” she said. Already her hips were moving. “I am only a slave girl,” she wept. With a roaring laugh he fell upon her.

Witness of Gor, Page 467
Then she felt his massive hand in her hair, tight, and he pulled her up to an erect kneeling position.
…
She then felt her body, her hair in his grip, his left hand on her left knee, bent backward, until she was helpless before him; the ‘slave bow,’ as the expression is, of her vulnerable, owned beauty thusly exhibited for his attention, or assessment.
Prize of Gor, Page 141
The rope was then lifted and a length of it looped twice about the slave’s neck and knotted there. In this fashion a single rope may be used for both binding and leashing. This is not all that unusual on Gor. One end secures the slave’s wrists, the center collars her, and the remainder, the free end, serves as a leash or tether. It may also be used, of course, if one wishes to immobilize her, to fasten her ankles together. Her ankles may be simply bound or, if one wishes, tied closely to her wrists. That tie is sometimes spoken of, properly or not, as the ‘slave bow.’ It may be called that simply because the slave’s wrists and ankles are bound together, and this bends her body, in a natural bow, or it may be called that because of a supposed analogy with exhibitory slave bows, in which, for example, on a slave block, a slave might be bent backward, or knelt, and her head drawn by the hair back to the floor, and so on. These exhibition bows are often utilized in showing the slave, as they accentuate the delights of her figure. There are a number of ‘tethering slave bows,’ of course, for example, for fastening a slave over a saddle, a wheel, a piece of furniture, or such. These diverse uses and meanings, of course, are not mutually exclusive, because a slave might well be displayed in a ‘tethering slave bow.’ Some conjecture that the original meaning of ‘slave bow’ has to do with exhibition. Accordingly, it is their speculation that the ‘tethering slave bows’ are derivative from that primary usage, that of exhibition. This would make sense because the ‘tethering slave bows’ certainly do exhibit the slave, as well as rendering her helpless. Others seem to feel that the basic meaning is that of a form of secure and revelatory binding, in which the slave is helplessly and delightfully displayed, and that the exhibitory usages of the expression are secondary, being founded upon, and derivative from, this more basic, original usage. On the other hand, as most suppose, and as seems most plausible to the slave, these usages may very well have been developed independently, both based on the obvious consequences on the slave’s body of a certain form of handling or manner of binding. There seems to be some division among Goreans on this matter. And doubtless it is not of great importance. Please forgive this excursion into speculative etymology. Ellen finds such matters fascinating, perhaps in part because she has been so handled and so roped. What is perfectly clear and indisputable is that in Gorean ‘slave bow’, putting aside considerations of origin, derivation and chronology, and such, has the basic meaning of the forming of the slave’s body into a bow, and two application meanings, one pertaining to a modality of exhibition and the other to a modality of binding. Abstract obscurity, as usual, vanishes in concrete context. As this phenomenon is common in many languages, it is not surprising that it should appear in Gorean, as well. A stripped free woman might, of course, be put in a ‘slave bow,’ without compromising the meaning of the expression. And the free woman might find this situation instructive, and anticipatory.

“Let me see her,” said Lord Grendel.

Har-ta
The kajira will move quickly, yet striving to maintain grace and beauty in her movement. Speed is the key. ‘Har-ta!’ means “Faster! ”.
We flashed through the end rings and, on the straightaway, saw, ahead, the Yellow and the Red approaching the left side rings. Like an arrow, a black torrent, Ubar of the Skies flashed toward the side rings. I think that there could be on Gor no tarn his equal. “Har-ta!” I cried. “Faster! Har-ta! Faster! Faster!”
Assassin of Gor, Chapter 22
“Har-ta!” cried Targo. “Har-ta!”
“Har-ta!” cried the men about us.
The girls began to push harder. We strained, to increase the speed of the wagon. From time to time the men would thrust, too, at the wheels.
We cried out with pain as two of the men, about the sides, one on each side, encouraged us with their switches.

Heel
The kajira moves to the master’s left side (if he is right-handed) and follows him wherever he goes, maintaining her position to his left. The exact distance from the master will depend on the circumstance; in the open, it may be 5-10 feet back, but in a crowded place, it could be so close as to be touching. If he stops for an extended period of time, or sits, then she will kneel in position.
The girl normally heels a right-handed Master on the left, that she not encumber the movements of the weapon hand.
Magicians of Gor, Page 117
These things vary, I learned from city to city, and depend, also, on such matters as context and conditions. In a market, in the crowding and jostling for instance, a girl may follow so closely she pressed against the back of his left shoulder. Girls seldom follow behind and on the right. If she is thusly placed it is commonly a sign she is in disfavor. If more than one girl is involved, she who follows most closely on the left is generally taken to be in highest favor; girls compete for this position. In an open area, such as the fields in which we trekked, the girl is placed some five or ten feet behind, and on the left. If he must move suddenly she will not, thusly, constitute an impediment to his action.
Slave Girl of Gor, Page 30
“You will be well taught to heel and obey,” said he.
Marauders of Gor, Page 118
The Forkbeard turned about and, one arm about Pudding, the other about Gunnhild , started from the dock.
Hilda followed him, to his left.
“She heels nicely,” said Ottar . The men and bond-maids laughed. The Forkbeard stopped. Hilda’s face burned red with fury, but she kept her head high.
Pet sleen are taught to heel; so, too, sometimes, are bond-maids; I was familiar with this sort of thing, of course; in the south it was quite common for slave girls, in various fashions in various cities, to heel their masters.
Hilda, of course was a free woman. For her to heel was an incredible humiliation.
The Forkbeard started off again, and then again stopped. Again, Hilda followed him as before.
“She is heeling!” laughed Ottar .
There were tears of rage in Hilda’s eyes. What he said, of course, was true. She was heeling. On his ship the Forkbeard had taught her, though a free woman, to heel.
Marauders of Gor, Page 123
The Forkbeard said nothing to her, but, the next day, when the sun was hot on the deck, and he released her for her exercise, and he walked about the deck, she, though a free woman, heeled him perfectly. The crew had roared with laughter. I, too, had smiled. Hilda the Haughty, daughter of Thorgard of Scagnar, had been taught to heel.
Marauders of Gor, Page 125
“My Jarl,” said a voice. We turned about. Hilda knelt before Ivar Forkbeard, her hair to his feet. “May I not follow my Jarl?” she begged. “A lowly bond-maid begs to heel her Jarl.”
“Then, heel,” said Ivar, good-naturedly, turning away.
“Thank you, my Jarl!” she wept, leaping to her feet, falling into step on his left, two steps behind him.
Marauders of Gor, Page 258
I now carried his shield. I walked behind him, and to the left. I suppose I should have minded. I knew, of course, that I was heeling him.
Slave Girl of Gor, Page 31
He turned about and, with his weapons, strode from the camp. I followed him, at his heel, where a slave girl belongs.

I strode toward the market. I must leave soon. The girl stumbled after me, weeping. “Please, Master!” she wept. I did not tell her to heel. It was not necessary. She was slave.
Beasts of Gor, Page 140
After being led on a leash it is not unusual for a girl to beg her master to be permitted to heel him, following him deferentially in her proper place.
Fighting Slave of Gor, Page 367
I extended my hand. I would snap my fingers. When I snapped my fingers she would rise to her feet and follow me, heeling me, like the sleek domestic beast she was, to her master’s lodge. One of the first things a girl is taught to do is to heel.

Kajira of Gor, Page 113
“Do you know how to heel, Feiqa ?” I asked.
“Yes, Master,” she said. She was a Gorean woman, familiar at least superficially with the duties and obligations of slaves. To be sure, as a recently free woman, she might perhaps find herself astounded and horrified at some of the things that would now, even routinely, be required of her. I did not know. Certain things which are not only common knowledge to slaves but even a normal, familiar part of their lives seem to be scarcely suspected by free women. These are the sorts of things about which free women, horrified and scandalized, scarcely believing them, sometimes whisper, fearfully, delightedly, among themselves. Some Earth-girl slaves, brought to Got, incidentally, do not even know how to heel. Incredibly, they must be taught. They learn quickly, of course, in the collar, and subject to the whip.
Mercenaries of Gor, Page 14
I then turned about, again, and hurried even more rapidly after my new master. I did not want to lag too far behind, outside the normal heeling distance.
Dancer of Gor, Page 290
“You, Claudia, slave girl,” she said. “Kneel behind him and to his left.” A slave girl, in heeling her master, commonly follows on the left. That she follows indicates that she is subservient, that he is master and she slave; that she follows on the left is a cultural matter probably indexed to the fact that most Goreans are right-handed. Her presence on the left, thus, is not likely to interfere with his draw or the movements of his sword arm.
Renegades of Gor, Page 214
“Heel,” I said.
“Yes, my captor,” she said.
I turned to regard her. She would follow me, behind and on the left. In this way the sword arm is not likely to be encumbered.
Vagabonds of Gor, Page 381
He called Teibar then waved to the men about, and turning about, took his way from the area of the circle. The slave rose to her feet and hurried after him, to heel him.

Witness of Gor, Page 321
That woman now, perhaps, with Laura, heeled her master in Brundisium , some paces behind, and to his left.
Prize of Gor, Page 222
“Master?” asked Ellen. But already he was threading his way through the crowd, and the fires. Swiftly she fell into place behind him, heeling him, behind his left shoulder, but, given the press of the crowd, much more closely than would normally be the case. A slave girl’s heeling distance is a function of a particular situation, of local circumstances, so to speak. In an open area a girl will normally heel three to five paces behind, normally on the left. Whereas following on the left, which is usual, may be a simple matter of gratuitous custom, it might also be noted that this arrangement may have a darker origin. If objects are to be handed to a man, say, a warrior, such as a buckler, or barbed war net, this transfer of articles from the left is not likely to discommode or encumber the most common weapon hand which is, of course, the right. On the other hand, it is thought that following on the left is generally a position of less dignity, and thus appropriate for animals, including slaves. A consideration favoring this possibility is that left-handed Goreans will also, commonly, have their sleen , their slaves, and such, follow on the left. A free woman walks proudly beside a free man or, if the press does not permit this, is often accorded the privilege of preceding him. One of the most humiliating things for a Gorean free woman, after she has been enslaved, other than the loss of her name, is that she must now follow, and neither walk beside nor lead.

Cecily had heeled me into the pavilion. After entering with me, she had gone, as was proper, to first obeisance position, beside me, a bit back and to my left.
Swordsmen of Gor, Page 194-195
Commonly, the slave heels the master, usually behind him on his left, as his sword arm is usually the right arm. In this way her presence is not obtrusive, and is unlikely to either distract or encumber him. Also, in this way, he is usually between the slave and other males, possible danger, and such, that she, unarmed and half naked, may be shielded. This also tends to protect her from free women. Too, of course, the position is one of subordination, and is thus fitting for a slave, and domestic animal. For example, a domestic sleen is also likely to heel the master, and also on the left.
Swordsmen of Gor, Page 415
“Heel us,” I snapped.
Dutifully the girls fell in behind us, on our left.
Swordsmen of Gor, Page 487
Normally the slave remains behind the master, commonly on the left, as she would in heeling him. The free woman, of course, either walks beside the free man, or precedes him. The slave walks behind, for she is a slave. She heels on the left, by custom, as most men are right-handed, and their weapon arm is not to be encumbered. On the other hand, these arrangements are not without value to the slave. In walking behind him, for example, she is protected, sheltered from danger by the wall of his arm and steel.
Swordsmen of Gor, Page 568
She increased her pace, to close the gap between herself and her master, that she might follow in prescribed heeling position.
Conspirators of Gor, Page 141
Interestingly, the Lady Bina was, in many ways, rather different from the typical Gorean free woman. She had observed other free women, with serving slaves, and so she had me heel her, at the proper distance, on the left, appropriately, head down, but she was not at all strict about my looking about and I frequently did so.
Conspirators of Gor, Page 207
I rose to my feet, and tied up, as I could, the torn tunic, and replaced the kerchief. I then, carrying the suls , heeled my Mistress from the market.
Conspirators of Gor, Page 216
“May I not heel Master?” I said.
“No,” he said, “the trail is too narrow.” One heels on the left side, usually a little behind. Much depends on the master, the terrain, the crowding, or such.
Conspirators of Gor, Page 417
I shall now speak of him simply as Grendel. I heeled him into the large room, and, when he crouched down, at ease, before the broad dais, I knelt behind him, on his left.
Conspirators of Gor, Page 492
His slave, Donna, was behind him, kneeling, on his left, a common position in which a slave heels her master.
Smugglers of Gor, Page 389
“We then continued on our way,” she said, “I between the two men, and the slave following, behind and on the left.”
“That is the common heeling position for a slave,” I said.

Kneel
The kajira will kneel in whatever mode she is supposed to kneel in. If she is a Tower slave, or in the presence of Free Women, then she will kneel appropriately in Tower mode. If she is an opened slave or pleasure slave, she will kneel in nadu.
The kneeling position is, of course, a suitable one for slaves. A slave will normally assume such a position on entering the presence of her master or a free person. She will probably remain in it until permitted to rise. It is a common position, too, for her to assume when she is in attendance of a master, for example, awaiting his notice or commands. Too, she will usually speak to her master from this position, unless, of course, she is lying down, as in making her reports to him, inquiring as to his will, answering questions, and so on. Some masters approve it, too, for purposes of general conversation.
Blood Brothers of Gor, Page 246
“Turn about , and kneel before me,” I said.
She did so.
“Must I lower my head?” she asked.
“No,” I said.
Rebels of Gor, Page 132
“Kneel,” he said.
In consternation, she slipped to her knees, confused.
Rebels of Gor, Page 193
“Kneel up,” said Sumomo . “Lift your head. I would look upon your pretty face.”
Rebels of Gor, Page 202
“Kneel,” he said, sharply.
Swiftly she knelt. She still had much to learn. The slave is not a free woman. The slave commonly addresses requests, petitions, supplications, and such, to the free person from a kneeling position, which is appropriate to her condition. Indeed, this position, suitable to the negligibility, shamefulness, and degradation of her status, is often assumed in the presence of the free.
Rebels of Gor, Page 324
Tajima strode to her, angrily. “On your knees,” he said.
“Head down!”
“Yes, Master!” she said.
The other girls, alarmed, swiftly assumed this position, as well, one quite meaningful to a woman, a position suitable for a woman, a position of slave submission.
Rebels of Gor, Page 360
“Get on your knees,” I told her.
Swiftly she went to her knees, before us.
I did not want her to bolt away, either in foolishness, or terror.
Kneeling is not merely a posture of submission; it is also a posture in which the slave realizes she is relatively helpless.
It is interesting, how the same position, say, kneeling, can be experienced. It might be experienced as unspeakably humiliating and degrading to a free woman, even debasing, but, to a slave, it is experienced as welcome, warm, fulfilling, desirable, and appropriate. It is a lovely expression of the servitude for which she has longed and in which she revels. It is a lovely expression of her submission to her master, her surrender, wholly, as a female, to him. She is no longer hers, but is now his. On her knees, submitted, is where she is and wants to be. She wants to love and serve, wholly and selflessly. She does not want to be her master’s equal. She wants to be her master’s slave. Even free women understand this, for they, too, are women.
Rebels of Gor, Page 463
“You will kneel here,” I said. I helped her kneel, easing her into place, as I had thonged her wrists together behind her back.
“As you are a free woman,” I said, “you may kneel with your knees closely together.”
It is common on the continent to interrogate slaves in a kneeling position. Indeed, slaves are often in a kneeling position before free persons, unless busied about their duties. Indeed, some masters prefer for the girl to be prone, or supine, or lying on their side, facing them. It depends on the master. Binding the slave’s hands behind her back, of course, emphasizes her helplessness, and helps her to keep clearly in mind that she is a slave, wholly subject to free persons. One would not be likely, of course, on the continent, to subject a free woman to such an indignity, unless one had a collar in mind for her.

“Kneel before me, kiss my feet, and declare yourself a slave,” said Pertinax .

Lips to Boots
On command, the kajira leans in to the master’s boots, and kisses each one, lingeringly and lovingly.
“Lips to boots,” I said.
She pressed her lips to my boots, left and right, kissing them, and licking at them.

Nestle
The kajira moves to the master, conforming her body into his.
“Nestle,” I told her. “Yes, Master,” she said. She nestled obediently in the crook of my left arm.

Run
The kajira runs as directed, taking small and rapid steps, legs almost straight, feet barely leaving the floor as she runs, her back is straight and her head is turned to the left, arms at her sides with palms facing outwards.
I was amused, for she had run as a slave girl is sometimes taught to run, with rapid short steps, her legs almost straight, her feet scarcely leaving the ground, back straight, head turned to the left, arms at her sides, palms out at a fourty -five degree angle, more of a dancers motion than a true run.”

She-Quadruped
This is not just a position, but a Discipline. In the Discipline of the She-Quadruped, the kajira is reduced to behaving like a lower form of animal, not permitted to rise from her knees as she goes about her duties, not permitted to communicate except through whimpers or grunts, feeding from the ground, and commanded to perform animal behaviors and tricks to further her humiliation.
IIn this form of slavery, which is commonly used for disciplinary purposes, or for the amusement of the Master, the woman is not permitted to arise from all fours; similarly she is not permitted human speech, though she may signify needs and desires by such means as cringing, and moaning and whimpering. Not permitted the use of her hands, save as a means of locomotion, she must also eat and drink from pans set on the floor, or, sometimes to satisfy her thirst, she must lap the water permitted to her from puddles or lick pillages from the tiles; too, it is no uncommon to chain her near her master’s feet, while he dines, that he may, if he wishes, throw her scraps of food. She will also be taught tricks, through which paces she may be put for the entertainment of her master’s guests, such things as begging, lying down, rolling over, and fetching his sandals in her teeth. And, needless to say, when her master wishes to use her sexually, it will be a position common to the she-quadruped.

Slave Lips
The kajira turns her face towards her master, extending towards him, as she purses her lips in preparation to be kissed.
“Slave lips,” I commanded. She pursed her lips and then I, gently, kissed them.
Blood Brothers of Gor, Page 138
Similarly, I was required to respond to certain sorts of commands, for example, to make “slave lips,” pursing my lips for kissing, or to writhe slowly before my viewers.
Kajira of Gor, P age 224
“Slave lips,” said Hci , angrily. Iwoso looked at him puzzled. “Purse your lips, as a white female slave,” said Hci .
Blood Brothers of Gor, Page 404
“On your back,” I snapped, “Make slave lips. Throw apart your legs!” Swiftly the girl complied, tears in her eyes. She then lay there, her lips pursed to kiss, her ankles widely apart. I looked down at her. She looked up at me, tears in her eyes. A girl who is commanded to make slave lips, or who receives the command, “Slave lips,” must form her mouth for kissing. She then, commonly, is not permitted to break this lip position until either she kisses or is kissed. Needless to say, a girl can not speak when her lips are in the unbroken, fully-pursed slave-lips position. The command which commonly follows the “Slave-lips” command is, “Please me.”

Stay
The kajira remains as she is, not moving until given permission to do so.
“Stay, Feiqa .”
“Yes, Master,” she said.
She would now keep her place, kneeling, as she was, until a free person might permit her to move.

Walk
This was commanded so that the kajira’s balance, grace, and beauty, could be judged. Her walk was required to beautiful at all times, and in the Tahari, it might be measured with a chain and bells between her ankles.

On-line Roleplay Positions
These are positions that have been created in the various roleplaying venues on-line, typically to serve the needs of the game or interaction which those people are engaged in. They are included here, not for ‘completeness’, but rather, so that the reader will know the origin of the position, and know what it is if they encounter it.
A great deal of energy has been spent debating whether or not it is appropriate to even acknowledge these positions, mostly ignoring one salient fact; they exist. They will not magically disappear because one ignores them, they are in use by some and it may be worthwhile to know what something is.

Karta
This is another form of the First Obeisance, or Prostration, only it is used in some roleplay areas as a greeting, or upon entrance to a roleplay venue. The slave kneels on the floor as in nadu, then leans forward to press her forehead to the floor, arms fully extended before her as though she were reaching out, palms down, and begs to enter or greet.
Suga
This is another version of the First Obeisance, or a minor variation on ‘Karta’. The slave kneels with wide-spread thighs, leans forward with breasts and cheek to the floor, extends her arms with crossed wrists towards the master.

Sula-Ki
This translates as “Alternate Sula”, the slave lays prone on her back, her hands at her sides with palms up, wide-spread thighs and feet flat on the ground, the slave lifts her hips to show her need.
Table
The slave kneels, then drops to all fours, at such an angle as to ensure her back is level. Her head is kept straight, thighs wide, she remains motionless as she is used as a table, or ottoman for the master’s feet.

Like a good Karian, I am pirating this for my own nefarious purposes.
It has been a LONG time since I was able to find a good representation of the positions. Thank you SO MUCH for posting this, and thank you for the beautiful pictures!
